I've boiled this down to the simplest example I can. I'm using Poster and adding the header "Content-Type" as "application/xml". Without that I get the 415 error and don't even get into the controller, with it I get into the controller and die before I bind my response, so the system.err.println executes and then it bails. With the content-type set I get a 406 error (but still get into my controller).
Controller:
package test.test.test;
import org.springframework.beans.factory.annotation.Autowired;
import org.springframework.stereotype.Controller;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.RequestBody;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.RequestMapping;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.RequestMethod;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.ResponseBody;
@Controller
public class HomeController {
@Autowired
@RequestMapping(value = "/", method = RequestMethod.POST)
@ResponseBody
public TestResponse getTest(@RequestBody TestRequest testRequest) {
System.err.println("testRequest: " + testRequest.getTestData());
TestResponse t= new TestResponse();
t.setResponseData("stuff");
return t;
}
}
Request:
package test.test.test;
import java.io.Serializable;
import javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlElement;
import javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlRootElement;
@XmlRootElement
public class TestRequest implements Serializable {
private static final long serialVersionUID = -4928814568645262069L;
private String testData;
@XmlElement
public String getTestData() {
return testData;
}
public void setTestData(String testData) {
this.testData = testData;
}
}
Respnse: package test.test.test;
import java.io.Serializable;
@XmlRootElement
public class TestResponse implements Serializable {
/**
*
*/
private static final long serialVersionUID = 2007976182805052992L;
private String responseData="test";
@XmlElement
public String getResponseData() {
return responseData;
}
public void setResponseData(String responseData) {
this.responseData = responseData;
}
}

You'll need to add an Accept
header with value application/xml
to your client request.
A 406 status code means that the server deemed the content it's preparing to be unacceptable for your client.
