and so on instead of 0.00005 0.00004

What I have tried so far is:

This does not seem to work. The document page for tickers does not seem to provide a direct answer.
You can use matplotlib.ticker.FuncFormatter
to choose the format of your ticks with a function as shown in the example code below. Effectively all the function is doing is converting the input (a float) into exponential notation and then replacing the 'e' with 'x10^' so you get the format that you want.
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import matplotlib.ticker as tick
import numpy as np
x = np.linspace(0, 10, 1000)
y = 0.000001*np.sin(10*x)
fig = plt.figure()
ax = fig.add_subplot(111)
ax.plot(x, y)
def y_fmt(x, y):
return '{:2.2e}'.format(x).replace('e', 'x10^')
ax.yaxis.set_major_formatter(tick.FuncFormatter(y_fmt))

If you're willing to use exponential notation (i.e. 5.0e-6.0) however then there is a much tidier solution where you use matplotlib.ticker.FormatStrFormatter
to choose a format string as shown below. The string format is given by the standard Python string formatting rules.

ax.yaxis.set_major_formatter(y_fmt)
