Using (OSX) Core MIDI in a c++ project

How can I learn what is expected of me to be able to utilize this in a C++ project?

(I guess a more fundamental question is also: Can I use Core MIDI in a C++ project? - but I've seen other stackoverflow questions where the answer appears to be "yes" [then again, those were from years ago...])

What do I need to do to get this set up- to the point where I can start using the API? The documentation doesn't so much as show what frameworks are used, what header files are required, etc...

So, what are the steps to get started?

Ideally, I'd like to be able to compile from a simple makefile.


Solution

  • The majority of the CoreMIDI API is plain old C. You can easily call it from C++ code without doing anything special.

    (The Apple docs have a language toggle between "Swift" and "Objective-C", but don't take "Objective-C" literally. It really means "C family, either C or Objective-C". Toggling it to Swift shows you the same APIs, but in the translated form that's visible to Swift.)

    The oldest and simplest piece of CoreMIDI sample code, "Echo.cpp", is in fact C++. It reads MIDI input from all sources and sends that MIDI data to the first available destination (on channel 1). It's very rough, but you have to start somewhere.

    To compile:
