When I try to appendtext to the TextArea(fx:id="text") gives me an error. I wrote this as a preparation for appending text to the TextArea from a textfile i.e. displaying the contents of a text file into the TextArea. Do I have to make a new TextArea variable inside the controller class and add it to the anchorpane parent as a child?
.java file:
package login;
import javafx.event.ActionEvent;
import javafx.fxml.FXML;
import javafx.fxml.FXMLLoader;
import javafx.scene.Parent;
import javafx.scene.Scene;
import javafx.scene.control.TextArea;
import javafx.stage.Stage;
public class studentOptionsController {
@FXML
private TextArea text;
public void pressAgreement(ActionEvent event) throws Exception {
text.appendText("Hello World");
Parent root = FXMLLoader.load(getClass().getResource("registrationAgreement.fxml"));
Stage textFileStage = new Stage();
textFileStage.setTitle("Registration Agreement");
textFileStage.setScene(new Scene(root, 400, 400));
textFileStage.show();
}
}
.fxml file:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<?import javafx.scene.control.TextArea?>
<?import javafx.scene.layout.AnchorPane?>
<?import javafx.scene.control.TextArea?>
<AnchorPane prefHeight="400" prefWidth="400" xmlns="http://javafx.com/javafx/8.0.121" xmlns:fx="http://javafx.com/fxml/1" fx:controller="login.studentOptionsController">
<children>
<TextArea fx:id="text" prefHeight="400" prefWidth="400" disable="true" text=""/>
</children>
</AnchorPane>

The way you are loading this is wrong. pressAgreement()
is a non-static method, which means you have already instantiated studentOptionsController
by the time you call that method. When you load the FXML in pressAgreement()
, the FXMLLoader
will create another studentOptionsController
instance because you have specified that in FXML (fx:controller="login.studentOptionsController"
).
Firstly, since the FXML has not loaded when you call text.appendText("Hello World");
, then text
is definitely null
, causing NullPointerException
.
Secondly, to use an existing controller, remove the controller in FXML and set it in FXMLLoader
.
FXMLLoader loader = new FXMLLoader(getClass().getResource("registrationAgreement.fxml"));
loader.setController(this); // Make this instance the controller
Parent root = loader.load();
Do note that text
will still remain null
until the FXMLLoader
has finished loading.
