Three steps:
Get the damn x264 from slackbuild and install it .
Get the latest ffmpeg (as mentioned in other thread, the url in the question) and build like that ..i.e
x264=yes ./ffmpeg.SlackBuild
root@Slackware_12:10:44_Mon Nov 22:~#installpkg /tmp/ffmpeg-4.4.1-x86_64-2.txz
Voila! ...the damn thing started to work .
